The Tanked “99” (Albacore Special)

This build will be a tanked “99”  commonly called the “Albacore special”. First you need to find an aluminum Tiburon spool and the proper frame.  P29HSK frame in silver and the P29HS spool.  The 99 size is a halfway between the 500 and 501.

P21 (Penn 501)…….1 5/8″ wide

P29 (Penn 99 )……2 1/8″ wide

P20 (Penn 500)……2 7/16″ wide

Pro Challenger makes the stainless steel double dog bridge plate, spacer, 5:1 Main Gear and Pinion, Eccentric and Yoke.  Source the stainless steel gear sleeve from Alantani.com with coarse thread.  I will be using aluminum side plates from Cortez Conversions with stainless steel spool bearing caps.  Upgrade the handle to stainless steel and dual bearing eva foam 50mm knob.  Finally to give this beast all the stopping power you could need, the 5+1 drag from Bryan Young.  Ground flat stainless steel washers and carbon matrix drag material.

300 yards of 30lb monofilament will fill the spool nicely.  Dual spool bearings will make for a nice casting reel.  Small size reel with great stopping power, fast gears and corrosion resistant.  Lastly, we will be placing four rare earth magnets in the left side plate to control spool speed and help with casting.
